Is getting your hardwood floors refinished a dusty process?
It should not be! It does depend on who you hire and what type of dust mitigation system that they offer or do not offer. When we started about 21 years ago, not many people used dustless sanding systems or vacuums. Putting a dust bag on the sanders was about it. Now, it is one of our biggest focuses, not only to keep our client's homes and belongings clean, we also want our team members to be safe. So how is this done? At Pasquale Floors, each sanding machine we own will be

Why do my hardwood floors squeak?
First, don't worry! It is very common, especially in homes that were built before 1950. Most of the time, the nails are getting loose, and you are hearing them move in between the wood floors and the subfloor, but, there are many reasons your hardwood floors can squeak. Other common reasons your wood floors squeak: Wood floors are installed while not in equilibrium with the subfloor/environment. Ideally your wood floors want to be installed with temperatures between 60-80 deg

Why do I have gaps in my hardwood floors?
One of our top 3 questions! You have gaps in your wood floors for a number of reasons, some of which you can control, some of which you can't. First, wood is hygroscopic meaning that it will absorb and release moisture, given the opportunity. In the summer when it is naturally more humid, the wood will swell and expand as it absorbs that moisture. In the winter, the wood floors will release the moisture and quite often shrink, due to the drier conditions. This type of expansi

What do we do AFTER our hardwood floors are refinished?
We want you to protect your investment, so here are some things you can do to keep your wood floors looking amazing! If we are just leaving your home today or finishing up your project over the next couple days here are some things you need to know. First, you can walk on the floor, 3 hours after the final coat of finish is put down (assuming we are using our standard, catalyzed water-based polyurethane). Types of wood flooring: Engineered vs. Solid vs. Pre-finished
So, what IS the difference? This gets confused a lot and often, people use the wrong terminology. Let's talk about all three. Solid Hardwood Floors: They can be up to 3/4'' thick, usually, the most common width in the Cleveland area is a 2.25'' or 3.25'' wide. This is, as stated, solid wood throughout. One benefit is solid wood flooring can have up to 1/4'' of a "sand-able" top layer, meaning your floors can be sanded up to 6-7 times. This is why you still see the original fl

What are some things I should NOT do with my hardwood floors?
Do not wear high heels on your wood floors, EVER. This will result in about 2000 lbs per square inch of force on your floors. No wood floor can take this much pressure and will most likely dent the floors with every step. Do not wet mop your floors or use steam mops. Both of these procedures introduce way too much water into the wood floors, ultimately resulting in the premature breakdown of the floor finish and/or dulling the sheen and/or premature cupping/crowning of your f

What sheen should we chose for our hardwood floors?
Most people do not think about this until the project is almost completed. There are usually 5 options when choosing a sheen level. 1. Gloss 2. Semi-Gloss 3. Satin 4. Matte 5. Ultra-Matte Traditionally, a very shiny, reflective, glossy floor was desired. As of late, the most popular sheen is satin (less glossy). The satin finish has a slight reflection of light, it would not be considered shiny or flat, it is right in the middle. If clients are desiring a shiny floor, we wil

Sand and finish my wood floors vs. Buff and Coat/Screen and Coat
Are Your Floors Showing Signs of Wear? Perhaps your floors are still in good shape, but you’ve started to notice some surface scratching. Maybe they were refinished a few years ago, and over time, your kids and pets have added some wear and tear. It’s also common for floors to take on damage during a home remodel, especially if contractors didn’t protect them as well as they should have. Common Signs You May Need a Buff and Coat: Scratches appearing in high-traffic areas like

How long does it take to refinish our hardwood floors?
It depends! A maintenance coat, where we are just cleaning, buffing and applying a new coat of finish can be done in a few hours. A bedroom sanding and refinishing can take between 2-4 days, where the refinishing of a first floor of an average size home could be closer to 5-7 and an entire home could be closer to 10 days, depending on size. Most of the time, the last couple days are much quieter, where we are just applying stain and/or finish.

What type of finish should I use for my hardwood floors?
One of our most common questions! Do you have a preference, if so we can accommodate you! Over the past 20 years, we have used them all. Oil Based Finishes: They are traditional, durable and have a thicker film build. They have been around for 80+ years for wood floors. The downsides are they have a very high, VOC content (Volatile Organic Compounds) in them, and they have a strong mineral spirits odor that can linger and off gas for up to 3 months. This, along with long dry

Do we have to move out, when you refinish our wood floors?
You do not! In fact 9.5/10 clients live in the home, when we are restoring their floors. If it is a large home, we can do it in phases also. Our dustless sanding system keeps the environment much cleaner than you would think. While we are sanding, you will have free reign of you home. Not until the last couple days, as we are applying stain and/or finish will we need you to stay off the floors, but it will only be 3, 1-3 hour windows as the finish is drying. We can also work

What do we do with our furniture when we refinish our hardwood floors?
Before we begin restoring your wood floors, we ask that all furniture must be completely removed from the areas being refinished . While this can be a bit inconvenient, it is unfortunately required to ensure the best possible results. We’ve worked with a few moving companies for over a decade and feel confident recommending them to help with furniture removal and replacement. That being said, it could never hurt to ask for the most senior members to help with your move: Two
