Scratches, Water Damage & Pets: Common Wood Floor Issues in Cleveland

At Pasquale Floors, we get frequent calls from homeowners across Cleveland and Northeast Ohio about wood floor problems. Many of these issues are preventable with proper care and attention. Here’s what you need to know.

Scratches & Gouges (Our #1 Call)

About once a week, we hear from homeowners, appliance stores, plumbers, movers, and other service companies reporting damaged wood floors. Almost every situation involves dragging something across the floor—beds, couches, tables, refrigerators, or dishwashers.

Why does this happen? People often assume wood floors are “bulletproof,” but even everyday stress can cause:

  • Scratches

  • Dents

  • Gouges

  • Cupping or crowning

  • Shrinking or expansion

These damages are very common in homes throughout Cleveland, especially during moves or renovations.

Water Damage (Too Much)

Flooding from broken toilet lines, slow refrigerator leaks, dishwasher supply leaks, or roof leaks can cause significant damage, including:

  • Cupping – edges rise higher than the center

  • Crowning – center rises higher than the edges

  • Swelling and permanent movement

Homes in Cleveland with older plumbing or appliances are particularly susceptible, making early detection critical.

Water Damage (Too Little)

Dry indoor air can also create problems. Ideally, maintain:

  • Temperature: 60–80°F

  • Relative humidity: 30–50%

In older Cleveland homes with radiators or no A/C/humidity control, you may notice increased gaps, creaking, or cracking over time. Portable humidifiers can help, but they’re often only a partial solution.

Pets

Larger pets, especially dogs over 25–30 lbs, can scratch and discolor floors. Urine can cause permanent staining if not cleaned immediately:

White → Gray → Black

Once black, boards often require full replacement. After refinishing, keep larger pets off floors for at least 24 hours—full cure takes 2–3 days.

How to Prevent These Issues

Scratching:

  • Never drag furniture or appliances across floors

  • Use an appliance dolly for heavy items (refrigerators roll front to back, not side to side)

  • Protect floors with brown paper, cardboard, plywood, or reusable protective mats like Ram Board or FloorShell

  • Lift smaller items instead of sliding

Water:

  • Watch for cupping, crowning, swelling, discoloration, and gapping

  • Catching issues early can save you from a full floor replacement

Pets:

  • Keep nails trimmed and clean accidents immediately

  • Avoid letting pets on freshly refinished floors until cured
