Do You Have to Remove Baseboards or Shoe Molding When Refinishing Hardwood Floors in Cleveland?
Great question—and one we hear all the time from homeowners throughout Cleveland and the surrounding suburbs.
Most of the time, no—you don’t have to remove them.
Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Cleveland, Ohio: What to Expect
In about 80% of our hardwood floor refinishing projects in Cleveland, Ohio, we’re working in older homes with original baseboards, shoe molding, and detailed woodwork.
We typically leave everything in place and take extra care to:
Protect your trim and woodwork
Avoid contact with sanding equipment
Prevent stain or finish from getting on surfaces
Setting the Right Expectations
We are extremely meticulous—but hardwood floor refinishing is still a hands-on process.
Because of that, minor touch-ups are sometimes needed after the work is completed, especially in older Cleveland homes or when working with darker stain colors.
This might include:
Small paint touch-ups on trim
Minor cleanup along edges
Nothing major—but important to plan for.
When Should You Remove Trim?
If you’re planning to replace your baseboards or shoe molding, removing them before we start is the best option.
This allows us to:
Sand fully underneath
Level the edges
Ensure new trim sits perfectly flush
Pro Tip: Paint After Floors Are Done
We recommend painting after your floors are refinished for the cleanest final result. If you paint first, expect some touch-ups afterward.
